There’s a chance that you’ve heard the term “spice” in reference to a drug but aren’t sure what it is. Whenever a new drug is introduced in our country, there are many concerns based on news stories. We live in a time when Fentanyl is coming into our country at an alarming rate, and there were dozens of news stories of people entering psychosis while on bath salts. The spice drug has been very popular for a few years, so it’s important to know what it is and how people use it.

What is Spice Drug?

This new drug called spice is often referred to as a synthetic marijuana or fake marijuana, and it comes from various substances. The base of spice is a mix of various herbs and different shredded plant materials, but people also mix it with different chemicals. It’s important to know that spice has a variety of different names as well, which include:

  • Black Mamba
  • K2
  • Bombay Blue
  • Skunk
  • Yucatan Fire

If you suspect that your child has been testing out various drugs, it’s important to know the street names people use for the drug. Educating yourself on these other names will help you know if your child is trying to get his or her hands on this drug. Unlike marijuana, spice isn’t an all-natural substance, and the chemicals in it make it a risk for abuse with no medical benefit. Also different from weed, this drug provides no proven medical benefit.

What Happens to Your Body on This Spice Drug?

Much like other addictive substances, the person can develop a psychological dependence to it and be unable to stop using it. When a person uses spice, he or she can experience a faster heart rate, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and more. In 2011, almost 30,000 people went to the emergency room because of the adverse effects of spice. Due to the way spice affects the body and because of the chemicals people use to make it, it also carries the risk of overdose.
