Heroin-Use

heroin useWhen we think of Newport Beach, Calif., images of pristine beaches, beautiful homes, and the good life come to mind. But the truth is that behind the glamour of this exquisite beach community, there is a serious heroin use problem.

At an April meeting of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District which includes students in Newport Beach, one board member described a presentation by the Newport Beach police department on the subject of drug use in the community. The narcotics offer at the presentation called drug use “rampant” in Newport Beach and added that, “the drug of choice now is heroin.”

Newport Beach is just one of the communities experiencing a sharp rise in heroin use. In a July, 2015 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heroin use in the U.S. has more than doubled since 2007. In fact, the increase is almost 150 percent. The CDC also reported that heroin users are using at least one other drug in combination with heroin. The rise in heroin and multi-drug use has spiked the 2013 death rate to four times what it was in 2000.

CDC director Tom Frieden said that the use of heroin is “increasing rapidly across nearly all demographics. And with that increase we’re seeing a dramatic rise in deaths.”

Heroin Use Spike

The Newport Beach rise supports the results of a study which showed that the spike in heroin use is not in the inner city, but is being fueled more affluent urbanites. In a 2015 study published in the Journal of Addictive Diseases, Jane Carlisle Maxwell, a political scientist at the University of Texas at Austin, wrote, “Heroin users are no longer inner-city minority groups but now are more likely to be younger whites living outside the large urban area.”

At The Hills inpatient drug rehab facility, we understand the effects that heroin addiction can have on the personal lives of everyone involved. But the recent rise in heroin use and the subsequent drug rehabilitation services we provide has gone from helping addicts achieving sobriety to saving their lives. This is task we take very seriously as we work to restore sobriety to the addict and peace of mind to loved ones.

As the school board member concluded in April, “You can’t put your head in the sand and think it’s not happening.”
