Guide to Checking into Drug Treatment

Getting into drug treatment is an important step in helping one who struggles with addiction. However, it can be an incredibly difficult situation, and sometimes overwhelming. It is important to look at different types of programs, as each program has a specific program.

Different Types of Drug Treatment

The first thing one should do upon wanting to get sober is research the different types of treatments available. The most strict treatment option is residential treatment. These programs offer a controlled environment and a full-time staff. Outpatient programs are programs in which the participating individuals are permitted to leave throughout their time, as long as they are attending necessary groups. Sober or transitional living houses provide a sober environment, and usually give privileges to residents who are working, going to school, or taking steps to better their life.

Things to Consider

There a couple things the individual should consider before picking a drug treatment. Prior to making any decisions, one should review their drug history to determine the appropriate treatment necessary. They should decide if they need inpatient or outpatient, a twelve-step based program, and see what the treatment center has to offer.

Some things to consider include:

  • Do they have medically-assisted detoxification program? Or are they provided on-site or at hospitals and independent facilities?
  • Are they medically accredited?
  • Do they recommend family participation or include a family program?
  • Do they offer or provide continuing care or an aftercare program?
  • What amenities do they offer?
  • Do they offer dual-diagnosis treatment?

How to Get into Drug Treatment

Once a drug treatment center has been chosen, a call should be made. As every program is different, there is no universal method to checking in to a treatment program. The drug treatment center itself will tell you what steps you need to take in order to check in. Often, if an individual is open to rehab, and the treatment center is ready to take them, it is extremely helpful to get them in as soon as possible.
