What is sexual addiction?









Much like a drug or alcohol addiction sexual addiction is the obsession or an uncontrollable need to engage in sexual activity. Sexual addiction can also be termed sexual dependency or because of the compulsive behavior of it, sexual compulsivity. The obsession of sex can affect the sex addict's work, health and personal relationships. Impulsive and unreasonable behavior can put the sex addict in harm. Denial is common with those suffering from a sexual addiction.

What are the signs of a Sexual Addiction?

Knowing the signs of a sexual addiction can help identify the disease. If you or someone you know is engaging in some of the following behaviors it is very possible that they are suffering from a sexual addiction.

  • Uncontrollable masturbation or self stimulation
  • Several sexual partners and/or multiple anonymous partners
  • Obsession with Pornography
  • Engaging in Phone-sex or Cyber-sex
  • Using prostitutes or prostituting oneself
  • Sexual harassment, molestation, or rape
  • Stalking or watching others

The desire or need to engage in sex generally increases as well as the risky behaviors to achieve sex. Sex addicts usually gain little to no pleasure from engaging in sexual activities. Generally they do not form significant relationships with their sexual partners. Often they have feelings of remorse, guilt, and shame after engaging in sexual activities. This confusing behavior can cause manic psychological emotions. Abstinence from sex can trigger anxiety, restlessness, anger and even violence.

Treating Sexual Addiction

Admitting a sexual addiction is the first and most important step to treating and recovering from sexual addiction. It is very difficult for a sex addict to openly discuss they have a sexual addiction, the emotional weight of shame and guilt can deter them from reaching out. It is vital to seek professional help for treating sexual addiction to address the core psychological issues with sexual addiction, through therapy, counseling and support groups. Because sexual addiction can progress to dangerous behaviors professional treatment is imperative to recover sanity and rebuild healthy relationships.
