Treatment for Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is most simply defined by a psychological or physical dependency upon a drug, building of a tolerance to the substance, physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms, problems relating to use, lack of control when using, and persistence of abusing substances even as problems are worsening. There may be other effects of drug addiction as well, depending on the substance. Drug addicts can try their hardest to abstain from using, but oftentimes it is not enough. They need drug addiction treatment.

Whether one is addicted to marijuana, heroin, or prescription medication, they can find treatment options to assist them. For many substances, the first step is a detoxification program. Detox programs give the addict a safe place to withdraw from the drug. Medical professionals help by prescribing medications, as well as providing a comfortable environment. Detoxifying without medical help may be dangerous, and in some cases, fatal.

After detox, rehabilitation facilities are a healthy step towards recovery. Inpatient treatment centers, also known as residential centers, are facilities in which people stay for a period of time. They partake in a program designed and proven to help the recovering addict, including group and individual counseling, encouragement of sober activities, and drug testing. There are also outpatient treatment programs in which members are permitted to leave while not in therapy. This allows the patient to carry on with their life, but also runs the risk of being exposed to substances.

Finally, sober living houses can help the individual immensely. In a transitional living situation, the individual lives with sober peers with whom they can relate. Drug testing is often conducted, and a house manager encourages involvement in a twelve step program or therapy. One can learn how to live healthily sober this way without being overwhelmed by an immediate introduction back into life.
